Question: A devotee having known the field (ksetra), knowledge and the object of knowledge, realizes his identity with You. But the seeker who wants to follow only the discipline of knowledge (jnana), what knowledge is essential for him?
It is essential to know Matter (Prakriti, ksetra) and Spirit (ksetrajna, Purusa) apart and to know them correctly as both being without a beginning.
Question: When both are without a beginning, from where do modifications and qualities (gunas) emanate ?
All modifications and qualities (gunas) are born of Matter (Nature, Prakriti). Moreover Prakriti is said to be the root of all activities, means (karana) and doership (kartaa).
Question: Oh Lord, in what aspect is spirit (Purusa) the cause ?
Spirit is said to be the cause in the experience of pleasure and pain. (Gita 13-19, 20)
Question: When does spirit become cause for experiencing pleasure and pain?
Spirit seated in Matter (Nature, Prakriti), accepting the relationship with it, experiences gunas (qualities) and attachment to these gunas is the cause of birth in various wombs. (Gita 13:21)
