ROLE OF PRARABDH ON OUR FREE WILL

agrasen Radhey Radhey Swamiji,

God also says that I am the doer. If our past prarabdh is strong enough and gives us enough willpower or less willpower, we will act accordingly in this birth also. Some people study hard, get good marks but that's mostly because of their SANCHIT PRARABADHA and one's freewill in the present life only acts according to the prarabdh, they came here with. Some people are born lazy, others are criminally minded, some are spiritually minded which is all due to the PRARABDHA, which is from previous births. The question also remains that as to who threw the first stone, i.e. while each soul was milk white or taintless when we started, why some people acted in the past this way and the others that way. It is clear on the surface that it's the God who is the director/PLAYER and we are only actors/shatranj ke mohre, acting under his direction and as to whatever he wants us to do, mostly based on PRARABDHA and very little so-called FREE WILL. It is he who decides as to when he wants to change US and make us do things rightly!

So, where is the free will! It's mostly a dream or a fallacy and leaves one in utter confusion!

Radhey Radhey Swamiji,

Thanks so much for such lucid explanation.

One questions that arises as I thought thru this is as follows:

Is it not prarabdha that you will have purshaartha. In other words, isn't it destiny that you will have freewill and that you will exercise it a certain way? It appears that freewill is also a part of destiny. In this line of thought, it feels that there is nothing called freewill and all that there is destiny. If we stop acting thinking that everything is destiny anyway, that stopping of the act is also a destiny. If we act thinking that there is freewill, then that acting is also a destiny.

When one ponders about this, one can't help but realize that the Almighty God is 'Jagannataka Suthradhari' - he is the director and we are just actors in his cosmic play. Some think that they are acting because they believe that it is their freewill. Fortunate are those who act knowing that it is His call.

Dear Suyash,

Radhey Radhey. The matter of destiny and free will is really very simple.

What is destiny? It is not something that comes to us out of the blue.
Destiny is determined by the karmas we performed previously by our free
will. You may even say that it is another name for our own past karmas.
Another name for it is prarabdh, and it is decided at the time of birth,
based on the karmas of our endless past lives. However, God has also given
us a certain amount of free will that permits us to think and act as we
wish. Actions performed by exercise of our free will are called purusharth.

Whatever we get in life is a consequence of both our destiny and the present
effort. Consider the analogy of a game of cards. The cards that are dealt
to you are unchangeable. This is like the prarabdh, which got decided by
our past karmas. But how you play is in your own hands. This is like the
purusharth, or actions that you perform by your free will. Good players can
win even when bad cards are dealt to them, while bad players lose even when
they have been dealt good cards.

Fatalists declare that everything is decided by prarabdh, and we do not
possess a free will to do purusharth. However, the fact that prarabdh
exists, implies that we have created it by our purusharth. If we did not
possess the free will to do purusharth, there would have been no prarabdh
either.

Now coming to your dilemma, it is not given to humans to know what exactly
our destiny is. If you get good results in your exams, it could be the
consequence of purusharth or prarabdh, or both. Astrologers do make attempts
to predict prarabdh, but these are highly inaccurate and unreliable. Even if
they could tell you your destiny, it would not help you. If an astrologer
told you a good destiny, "You are going to pass in the exam," you would
reduce your endeavour and become lazy. On the other hand, if the astrologer
told you a bad destiny, "You are going to fail in the exam," you would
become dejected. So while endeavouring, it best not to bring destiny to
mind. Simply put in your best effort.

However, remember that the result of your work is not totally dependent on
your efforts. So when the result comes, feel contented by thinking, "It may
be because of my destiny or the will of God, etc." In this way, if the
result is unfavourable, you will not be disturbed. And if the result is
favourable, you will not feel proud. Thus, the sutra for work is: prayatna
mein savdhan, phal mein santushtha. "Work very carefully, as if the results
depend upon your efforts. Be contented in the fruits, thinking, they could
be the result of destiny and other factors."

With best wishes,
Swamiji

life

Respected Swamiji

Radhey Radhey

There is some confusion and I would be really greatful if you would
spare your valuable time to help me with it.....

I want to know till what depth or what detail does the influence of
our prarabdha extend in our life???

We are free to do our karma. And what we get as a result of it....is
it our prarabdha? And if it is our prarabdha then is it not
predecided? Then what is our control on what we do?

I can better explain my question by taking an example from what I
observed last year. I got admission into a college by getting a rank
in an examination. As I am free to do my karma, I studied for the
examination to get the rank. Now if we say that it was my destiny or
prarabdha to get there in the college, then it would have been
possible for me to do that even without studying.....but the fact or
truth is that without studying it is not at all possible to get there.
So, looking back now if we say that it was destined for me to get
there and that's why I studied, then how was I free to do my karma (of
studying for the exam) ?

I know that this confusion of mine might sound dumb....but please give
me some explaination on this......

Thanks so much for reading

With due regards
Suyash
