Mumbai: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has swung into action to help BJP win the Lok Sabha elections and thereby pave way for LK Advani’s berth at the prime minister’s post. RSS has launched series of meetings with BJP top brass in various states with a clear message that RSS will do whatever possible for the BJP’s victory. RSS made it clear that it and the Parivar (comprising Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajarang Dal, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Vanvasi Kalyanashram) cannot share the BJP's political platform but will be active in the election management in particular.
Sources at the RSS and BJP told FE on Wednesday “BJP has been told in clear terms that it should not deviate from the Hindutva agenda. BJP has also been asked to bury hatchets among their leaders and workers and work in unity for the party’s victory to defeat the Congress party at the national and state levels. Apart from terrorism, current economic slowdown will be the major issues to take on the Congress and its allies.”
As far as BJP’s alliances with various parties, RSS has asked the party to strike such alliances quickly so that NDA becomes strong. Incidentally, RSS, which had taken a serious objection against Advani’s praise for Pakistan’s architect Barrister Jinah, has already pardoned off the latter and decided to be pro-active in Advani’s elevation to the PM’s post.
BJP sources said RSS’s active support will be quite crucial to consolidate its position especially in states where BJP has lost recent assembly elections or where the party organisation is quite weak. According to sources, BJP will focus on projecting the UPA Government’s failure in handling the cross border terrorism and internal security especially against the backdrop of 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai. The Lankan issue and not trying to bring a ceasefire in the island nation will also be taken up especially in the southern states. The BJP would also grill the Congress on the issue of price rise of the essential commodities.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra BJP unit has told the RSS that its over two decade electoral ally, the Shiv Sena has humiliated the party on several occasions and it was not keen in continuing the tie up.
