PARLIAMENTARIANS CLEARING PENDING BILLS!
It refers to pleasant surprise, courtesy Election Commission, that retiring Lok Sabha members are ‘voluntarily’ rushing to clear their pending dues towards government-bills like of rent, water, phone, electricity etc. because new rules authorise returning officers to reject nomination forms of those Parliamentarians which fail to secure no-objection certificates in this regard. But what about recovery of dues from those not willing to re-contest elections? Pending dues from former Parliamentarians should be deducted from their first payments of pensions. For future, system should be for regular auto-adjust of bills from pay-packets of MPs so that arrears may not be generated at all. Elected representatives should be made to act as role-models for being exemplary law-abiding citizens.
In a recent response to an RTI petition, Air Force has admitted that suit for recovery of Rupees 59131476 as dues for use of Air Force planes as Prime Minister by late Shri Chandra Shekhar for non-official purposes was dismissed by the Court because of his death, and Air Force has to file an appeal in the High Court for recovery of the amount from his legal heirs/political party he belonged. Heavy recoveries are also due towards HD Devegowda and VC Shukla. It is a national shame that even persons having been posted as Prime Minister are defaulters towards national exchequer. Rule should be to de-recognize such persons and their political parties, and not allowing them to contest elections till Air Force dues are paid. Prime Ministers/Defence Ministers entitled to use Air Force planes for non-official purposes should be made to pay in advance before boarding them.
Even persons using government-accommodation must compulsorily vacate the same within one month of losing entitlement to retain with courts resisting granting stay on evictions. In Britain, new Prime Minister finds 10, Downing street (London) vacated to enter the official residence just after taking oath. Even in India, Shabana Azmi vacated the government-bungalow before she moved to attend her last session of Rajya Sabha.
