Friends,

"Letting go has never been easy and to let go of a whole year is all
the more difficult. Each memory, good or bad, is replayed bringing
with it the surge of emotions felt at that particular point of time",
writes Geetu Vaid in the middle column of 'The Tribune' on the eve of
2009. But let go we must, and hope that the New Year will bring more
joys rather than frustrations for us as humankind, as Indians and as
individuals.

The year ends not with a bang, as some expected, but a whimper, in a
slow, agonising way, leaving the world in a daze about the grave
economic crisis, which may drag on into the New Year and beyond. A
certain helplessness has descended over us as never before and what
sustains us is the hope that things will not go out of control in this
time and age. Nothing short of a miracle is expected to save the
world. In India, the helplessness is accentuated by the fact that
retaliation against an armed aggression (not a mere terrorist attack)
might result in untold suffering. The dilemma will extend into the New
Year, even though the news on the last day of 2008 is encouraging.
Pakistan appears to look isolated and exposed. In West Asia, the
familiar spectacle of death and destruction continues. Is the known
nuclear capability of India and Pakistan a deterrent to similar action
and reaction in South Asia?

The theatre of 2008 was provided by the India-US Nuclear Deal, but the
courage of the Government has paid off, as seen by the deafening
silence after it came into force. After the agreements with France and
Russia were signed, there were no arguments that nuclear energy may
not be needed, its cost is prohibitive, it has inherent dangers and it
is better to go for the thorium route! Even though the conditions of
supply from these countries are subject to the conditions of the NSG
clearance, there was no hue and cry about testing and reprocessing.
The obvious conclusion is that what some people hate is not nuclear
energy, but the strategic alliance with the United States. The
enthusiasm in India for Barack Obama is tempered by his views on
non-proliferation, Kashmir and outsourcing, but the greatest hope of
the year 2009 will be the advent of the Obama Presidency.

India's moon shot and Abhinav Bindra's gold shot have revived India's
aspirations to super star status, but both these are but silver
linings in the cloud. The Indian boom may have reached a critical
stage and the global meltdown may turn it into a bubble, leaving us to
struggle along in 2009 with a lower growth rate. The elections may
change the Government, but nothing much else. Political leadership has
lost credibility and the answer may be to seek new masks to hide their
vulnerability, but a few changes of faces will not make any difference
as the political system works on the basis of dynasties and money
power.

On the personal front, Lekha and I are slowly bridging the 40 year gap
in our Kerala experience. We have discovered relatives and old friends
and made many new friends around us. We have unfortunately lost some
too. The daily golf rounds, though threatened by takeover bids, still
make Thiruvananthapuram life pleasant. Lekha keeps up her Karuna
charity work, dance and yoga. The news from our elder son and his
family have been cheerful as the twins, Durga and Krishna, enter their
sixth year. They say the mood is gloomy around, but they seem to be
doing their best in work and play. Our younger son is in the process
of settling in his new job with Afras in Dubai, but the more happy
part is that he is frequently in Kerala for work and spends time with
us. With my appointment to the National Security Advisory Board, my
trips to Delhi have become more frequent. KIC had its first major
conference on foreign policy in Thiruvananthapuram, which was hailed
by many as one of the best in terms of participation and liveliness.
My book, "Words, Words, Words" will have a reprint next year and the
publishers are asking for another book, which is still in an early
stage. With reading, writing, telecasting and public speaking, life is
hectic. The speech circuit takes me to a variety of audiences, ranging
from schools and colleges to mammoth meetings of the Congress Party
and Nair Service Society. My television show is in its fourth year. We
have much to be grateful for and much to anticipate just like everyone
else.

Many of you have sent us greetings by way of cards, gifts, calendars,
emails, SMSs and phone calls. We reciprocate the warmth in them and
offer these thoughts to wish you the very best for the New Year.

Lekha and I have just come back after ushering in the New Year at the
Leela Resort at Kovalam to send these warm wishes to you.

Sincerely,

TPS
