You've got the facts of life wrong, my friend. It is so typical of US-based Indians who have no knowledge about their own history. Please don't spread misinformation. Here is a sampling of the actual stuff:

Bombay has no bombs and is a harbour not a bay.

** Bombay was discovered in 1508 by the Portugese traveller Francis Almeida who named it as Bom Bahia meaning the Good Bay. There are no bombs in it but only goodness. Mumbai on the other hand is derived from the orange faced eight-hand Goddess of Mumbai known as Mumbadevi who killed the demon Mumbaraka who terrorised the area.

Churchgate has neither a church nor a gate. It is a railway station.

** Churchgate was one of the four main gates of the walled city of original British Bombay and because it was close to the Church it was so named. The fortress which encircled the British part of the city from the native quarters which began at Mohammed Ali Road and at Kalbadevi etc.

There is no darkness in Andheri.

** Andheri actually comes from "Undheri"

Lalbaag is neither red nor a garden.

** This area was named because of the country house that Pestonjee Wadia; brother of Jamsheji Wadia built for himself. Today, this country house is probably “Wadia Baug” as it was converted into a complex of low-rent flats for Parsis. It was a posh area of Bombay where the poshest houses were. Even the bungalow of the Governor of Bombay was there. It also housed the mansion of the Luvji Wadia family, 16 generations of which were master shipbuilders to the East India Compnay and whose ships were considered the best in the world only next to the Kerala ships constructed in Kerala.
No king ever stayed at Kings Circle .

Nor did Queen Victoria stay at Victoria Terminus.

** The Victoria Terminus was built on the occasion of Queen Victoria's
Nor is there any princess at Princess Street .

Lower Parel is at the same level as Parel

** Lower Parel is lower than Parel. Don't be mistaken by the fact that the station is at a height. The area is actually lower.

There are no marines or sailors at Marine Lines.

** Marine Lines takes its name from the 10 Marine Battalion of the Bombay Pioneers. This battalion, composed of Indian troops led by British officers, was stationed here during the mid-19th century.

The Mahalaxmi temple is at Haji Ali not at Mahalaxmi.

** The temple derives its name from the Goddess just as the area. Haji Ali is the name of saint after whom the mosque in the sea is named. It is niot the name of the area. The area is Mahalaxmi which houses the temple and the mosque.

There are no pigs traded at Dukar bazaar.

You cannot buy coal at Kolsa street.
There are no Iron smiths at Lohar chawl.
There are no pot makers at Kumbhar wada.
Null bazaar does not sell taps.
** Dukkar Bazaar at one time actually did that. Just as Chor Bazaar had stolen goods and Null Bazaar traded in taps and Loha Bazaar was a hardware street. These specialisations have gone but a majority of the population of these streets still have specialised shops.

Lokhandwala complex is not an Iron and steel market.

** The name 'Lokhandwala' refers to the construction firm Lokhandwala Constructions Pvt. Ltd. (then owned by Siraj Lokhandwala), who were the primary developers of the suburb of Versova which was basically a marshland. The official name for the area, Shri Swami Samartha Nagar, is less well known. If you remember

Teen batti is a junction of 3 roads, not three lamps.

** There was a "three-lamp" post at the junction of the three roads which is why it got's its name. It ceased to exist decades ago.

Trams used to terminate at Kings circle not Dadar* Tram Terminus (Dadar T.T.).

** Wrong! The trams went up to King's Circle (there was nothing after that till 1947 when Chembur was developed as a Sindhi refugee camp Post Partition in 1947-48)on one side and up to Colaba on the other but the terminus (where the trams terninated) was at Dadar. The place where the trams halted can still be seen even today. Much of the terminus now houses the BEST Bus Depot.

Breach Candy is not a sweetmeat market, but there is a Hospital.
Safed Pool has the dirtiest and blackest water.
** The Pul was coloured white and hence the name. The water has nothing to do with it. Besides, it is neither dirty nor black. Have you seen the place?

You will not find ladyfingers at Bheendi Bazaar.

Kalachowki does not have a black Police station.
** OF course it has one of the oldest police stations.
Hanging Gardens are not suspended.

** The Hanging Gardens are suspended because they are built on a hillock.
Mirchi Gully does not sell chillies.
Figs do not grow in Anjir Wadi.
Sitafals do not grow in Sitafal Wadi,
Jackfruits do not grow at Fanaswadi.

These old time waadis like Amrut Waadi etc were named for what the trees they had at one time.
But it is true that you may get fleeced at Chor Bazaar!

Not true now. It was named because it was a market for stolen goods and you could bargain for them.
