PHOTOGRAPHS OF SC JUDGES ON WALLS
DISPLAYING PHOTOS OF JUDGES AT SUPREME COURT
It refers to wide-spread criticism for putting up large photographs of Supreme Court judges for a full public glare at most prominent place outside court-room of Chief Justice of India at Supreme court, even though such photos were already placed inside judges’ gallery at the Apex Court. Former Chief justice of India JS Verma has justifiably commented that basic need was to make wealth and assets of judges (including of their spouses and dependent children) public rather than their photos! It would have been better if Bar would have been consulted before taking the decision when Supreme court Bar Association Chief rightly linked the issue with conduct-code of judges by saying ‘Judges should be known by their judgment and not by their faces or photographs’.
It is immaterial whether photos of judges are put in courts or not, but 16-point conduct-code titled ‘Restatement of Values of Judicial Life’ passed by all the 22 judges of the Apex Court on 07.05.1997 must be rather embossed permanently on walls and pillars of Supreme Court and High Courts so that consumers of justice may notice for themselves any violation of conduct-code by any judge.
