A loss for India, says BJP

Statesman News Service
NEW DELHI, Oct. 2: The BJP today said the "extraordinary commitments" made to the US senate with regard to the Indo-US nuclear deal would not only jeopardise the country's sovereignty by making it difficult to conduct future nuclear tests but also implicitly bring India under the NPT regime.
"The publicised virtues of the deal are non-existent. The USA has given no binding fuel supply assurance to India, contrary to what the PM had told Parliament. Neither is there any US consent to India's stockpiling of lifetime fuel reserves for power reactors which was assured in case of disruption of fuel supply," the BJP spokesman, Mr Rajiv Pratap Rudy, said. He accused the Prime Minister of leading the nation into "a blind trap" and said the country would have to pay a heavy price for his intransigence.
Mr Rudy said the deal might be a victory for the UPA regime but it was "certainly a colossal loss for India". "It appears as if all the obligations are squarely placed on India while all privileges have been heaped on the NSG," he said.
