LEGALISING LIVE-IN RELATIONSHIP

Even though proposed move in Maharashtra to legalize live-in relationship of a woman living with a man for reasonable period by providing status of wife is welcome to check incidents of dejecting such a woman after enjoying by a man, yet drafting of the bill should take enough care to safeguard interests of first wife when such legalizing live-in relationship may make a man having additional wife/wives. Best is to consider any live-in relationship by a married man with another woman as criminal offence. Considering wide-ranging implications of such a reformative step, draft-bill should be put for public opinion before giving a legal status, so that religious heads may be able to give their views on the aspect.

Effective checks should be imposed so that having additional wife/wives by a non-Muslim person by symbolic adoption of Islam for a short period may not possible. Even Islamic religious institutions/leaders have considered adoption of Islam only for marriage as wrong.
