RAMLILA IN DELHI

RAMLILA IN DELHI

Oldest Ramlila in Delhi is staged at famous Ramlila Grounds from the time of last Mughal emperor Bahadurshah Zafar with daily procession from Ramchandra Dehlvi Marg (Esplanade Road) to Ramlila Grounds with its return route in the night. This day-night daily procession with beautiful two wooden-horse chariots was a centre of attraction for even foreign-dignitaries. But now one of the main chariots with silver carvings is missing for last some years. Decoratives for wooden-horses and costumes and other items of artists are also missing despite huge amount of donation collected by managing persons. Ancient Ram-Temple at Esplanade Road which used to be originating point for daily procession is under control of some other persons.

Union government should take over this mismanaged Ramlila and all its assets including temple and other properties to maintain it as heritage as declared by UNESCO in the manner Mysore-Dussehra of world-fame is now controlled by Karnatak government. Otherwise day is not far when present management may disperse remaining assets of this Ramlila. This Ramlila can be funded by UNESCO-allocated budget to promote Ramlila as heritage of humanity.
