NRI AND COMPANY and the LOK ADALAT

NRI marriage sufferer gets justice, divorced from husband

New Delhi, July. 17 (PTI): Amy George (name changed) got married to an NRI in 2001 but only after ten days of marriage her husband moved alone to Canada and ever since refused to acknowledge her as his wife.

And one year later, when her husband Simon Robert (name changed) finally agreed to sponsor her as his spouse for the visa and she travelled to Canada, Amy, with excellent academic records, was shocked to discover that he was not a computer engineer as he had claimed but only a switchboard operator.

However, the 31-year-old woman, another victim of cheating in an NRI marriage, got speedy justice in a Lok Adalat held here yesterday when she obtained a divorce from Robert, who has also been ordered by the court to pay her Rs 2.5 lakhs as compensation.

Both the parties also agreed to withdraw any pending cases against each other in India or abroad.

"After only ten days of our marriage, Simon moved to Canada. When finally he agreed to sponsor me as his spouse for the Canadian visa, he kept trying to delay the visa formalities," said Amy, who hails from Kerala.

"Not only this, she also told the Commission that before marriage, Simon's family had told them that he was a software engineer. But when Amy reached Canada, she was shocked to see that he actually worked as an ordinary switchboard operator," said Reny Jacob, Member, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).

However, Amy has got admission as a research scholar in the Ontario-based University of Waterloo and is pursuing a PhD in molecular biotechnology.

This was one of 65 cases taken up by the Lok Adalat organised by DCW in collaboration with Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA).
