CANADIAN PM PROSTRATING AT A SIKH FESTIVAL

Canadian PM prostrates self at Sikh festival

I said a few days ago that if America is on the path to national suicide, Canada is on the ski slope to national suicide. Exaggeration, you say? Look at what the Canadian Prime Minister, the Honorable Paul Martin, was up to earlier this week, as seen in the Toronto Sun:

Canadian PM Martin kneeling at Sikh festival.jpg

The PM was attending a huge Sikh gathering in honor of Khalsa Day, which is the Sikh new year and the anniversary of the founding of the Sikh religion in 1699. The news story accompanying the photo didn't bother to mention Martin's behavior as shown in the photo, but talked instead about political maneuvering between Martin and his political opponents at the festival. The caption under the photo was similarly bland:

The prime minister pays his respects as he attends Sikh Khalsa Day celebrations yesterday in Nathan Phillips Square. Paul Martin’s staff are arranging a meeting between the PM and NDP Leader Jack Layton to discuss the possibility of the pair working out a budget deal. (Stan Behal, SUN).

Pays his respects? Budget deal? You can't get blander--or more Kafkaesque--than that. The country's leader has got a rag on his head, he's bowing down on his knees to an oriental god, and the photo caption talks about a budget deal! By presenting the Prime Minister's utterly outrageous and surreal behavior as though it were completely normal, not even worth commenting on, the Canadian media paralyzes the ability of Canadians to respond to it.

Let's face it. When it comes to national suicide, we Americans are mere amateurs compared to our northern neighbors. I'm almost tempted to say it's in their blood.
