Dear Insafcan,
The latest rulings given by the Indian Home ministry as per the under noted link is:
"

Consulate General of India
San Francisco

LATEST NEWS: In supercession of previous rules, Government of India has decided that Persons of Indian origin who have already acquired foreign citizenship uptil 31 May 2010 will not be required to pay renunciation fees of USD 175.00, he/she will be required to pay Miscellaneous fees of USD 20.00 when getting the old Indian passport cancelled/surrendered.

In future those Indian citizens who acquire foreign citizenship on or after 01 June 2010 will have to submit declaration of renunciation of their Indian citizenship forms as given on website and fees of USD 175.00

Wisdom has at last dawned on the GOI and much needed relief has been announced.
Krishnaswamy.

Dear Krishnaswamyji,

Namaskar. Thks for the good news in paragraph one.

But why the GOI will still charge $175.00 from Indian citizens taking foreign citizenship after 1 June 2010; is it a golden handshake (the other way around) for the UPA Govt./GOI upon renunciation of the Indian citizenship, or is it the new Indian culture 'under development' of saying goodbye as it can no longer milk them in the future?

With best regards,

Sincerely,

AGRASEN

Important Advisory regarding ‘Cancellation of Indian passport/Obtaining Surrender Certificate

Please be informed that there is no mandatory requirement for Persons of Indian Origin to carry their Surrender Certificates or cancelled Indian passports while travelling to India.
